PhD in Quantum Science and Engineering

UChicago PME

The PhD in Quantum Science and Engineering program at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering provides students with the opportunity to study with some of the most prominent researchers working in both fundamental and applied aspects of quantum science. The program encompasses a variety of engineering topics that will help shape the quantum future, including quantum computing, quantum communications, quantum sensing, as well as research in quantum materials. Students have the option of working with one or more thesis advisors to build a cross-cutting research project that touches multiple disciplines.

Our graduate students work within a growing nexus of quantum research in Chicago, which includes the Chicago Quantum Exchange, two Department of Energy funded national quantum information science research centers Q-NEXT and SQMS, the NSF QuBBE Quantum Leap Challenge Institute, one of the longest ground-based quantum communication channels in the country, and much more.

Master of Engineering

UChicago PME

In the Master of Engineering’s Quantum Engineering Track at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, you will learn the fundamentals of quantum mechanics and quantum information, focusing on applications to quantum computation and security. In-depth electives allow you to specialize in quantum optics, electronic devices, quantum materials, and nanofabrication.

This program suits candidates interested in a career or advanced studies in quantum computation, either applied to hardware development or to building computational tools and software.

Major and Minor in Molecular Engineering

The College

The BS degree in Molecular Engineering offers undergraduates a cutting-edge engineering curriculum built on a strong foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology. Courses in the major are designed to develop quantitative reasoning and problem-solving skills; to introduce engineering analysis of biological, chemical, and physical systems; and to address open-ended technological questions across a spectrum of disciplines. Molecular Engineering majors can opt to take the Quantum Engineering Track.

Other PhD Programs - Physical Sciences Division

The Physical Sciences Division offers a range of graduate degree options in cutting-edge programs, including programs involving work in quantum science and engineering. As a student here, you will have the opportunity to explore new frontiers in the physical and mathematical sciences and study alongside world-leading faculty.
